LeBron tech, explained

Every LeBron is a mix of an air unit, foam and parts that hold the foot. Here is what each term on a release page means and which models use it.

Short answer

Zoom Air is a thin pressurized unit with tensile fibers inside that springs back fast; LeBrons 1 to 6 used it. Max Air is a big visible air bag for impact protection; the LeBron 7 introduced a full length one. Zoom Turbo is a top loaded Zoom unit shaped for the forefoot (LeBron 20 to 22). Drop in midsoles put foam right under the foot: ZoomX on the LeBron 23, React on the LeBron 24.

Zoom Air

A Zoom unit is a flat bag of pressurized air with fibers stretched between the top and bottom. The fibers stop it ballooning, so it stays thin, and the air pressure pushes back quickly when you land. That is why it is called responsive: you feel the court and the bounce.

Max Air

A Max Air bag is larger and thicker, built to soak up hard landings. The Air Max LeBron VII put one under the whole foot. Later LeBrons often used Max Air in the heel and Zoom in the forefoot to get both.

Foam and drop ins

Foam holds the air units and adds cushioning of its own. The LeBron 23 and 24 moved a thick layer of foam inside the shoe as a drop in midsole, so it sits right under the foot.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Zoom Air and Max Air?

Zoom Air is thin and springy, with tensile fibers that keep the unit flat and return energy quickly. Max Air is a larger, thicker air bag that absorbs big impacts and is often visible from the side.

What does top loaded mean?

A top loaded unit sits near the top of the midsole, right under the insole, so you feel it more. A bottom loaded unit sits lower, closer to the outsole.

What is a drop in midsole?

A thick foam layer that sits inside the shoe like an insole, on top of the footbed. The LeBron 23 used ZoomX foam this way and the LeBron 24 uses React foam.

What is a midfoot shank?

A stiff plate under the arch, in carbon fiber or TPU, that stops the shoe folding in the middle when you plant and push off.
